Summer in the city

I've just realised, after listening to this song for the nth time, that it seems to have been written for/in my hometown, Murcia, in southern Spain. Loooong, boiling, sticky days and fresh, cool, reactivating nights.

So, for those who don't have any other thing to do in the summer, in the city...

Aprender Inglés Rápido y Fácil is a web that offers a variety of courses (Beginners, Basic English, Pronunciation, etc) The best thing? It is free and offers plenty of exercises for those starting with the
language.

Another option is to learn English through movies. In average, as little as 20 minutes a day will definitely improve your English in a matter of months. Plus, if you like cinema, you'll get the bug of listening to your favourite actors' real voices and there won't be coming back. You'll never want to watch movies in Spanish. So, think twice.

Finally,  another fun way to learn and improve a new language, like English, through music, completing the lyrics. There are different languages and lots of artists. For every song, then, you can choose different activities.

The Norman Conquest

Maybe it is because it is the end of the year, or because, after all the mayan fuss, the world has not ended, but the truth is I have left this solemn, serious post to farewell the old year.

The Normans, coming from France, transformed England, both culturally and linguistically. For over 300 years French is the language spoken by the most powerful people - royalty, aristocrats and high-powered officials - some of whom could not speak English at all. French is used in political documents, in administration, and in literature. Latin is still the language of the church and of scholars, but most of the general population speak English in their everday lives.

French words

Thousands of French words become embedded in the English vocabulary, most of which are words of power, such as crown, castle, court, parliament, army, mansion, gown, beauty, banquet, art, poet, romance, chess, colour, duke, servant, peasant, traitor and governor.

Language Change: 100 Years War 1337-1450s

After the 100 Year War, many people saw French as the language of the enemies. The status of English rose. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge were born. Literacy rates increased but books were still copied by hand and were therefore extremely expensive.

New Latin words

Many thousands of Latin words came into the language, most of which are connected to religion, medicine, law or literature. These words include scripture, collect, immortal, history, library, solar, recipe and genius.

The Renaissance

In 1476, Caxton introduces the printing press to England. He prints all kinds of texts: mythic tales, popular stories, poems, phrasebooks, devotional pieces and grammars. Written texts become cheaper and are thereby increasingly popular as literacy rates rise. Printers have to make a choice about which words, grammar and spellings to use. The choices they make help to set and spread a standard language. They base their decisions on the dialects of the South East - the most socially and economically influential region. But these rules are not set in stone, and people continue to speak in different accents and dialects, and to write with different spellings.
New Words

New words came from across the globe, including atmosphere, explain, enthusiasm, skeleton and utopian (from Latin); bizarre, chocolate, explore, moustache and vogue (from French); carnival, macaroni and violin (from Italian); harem, jar, magazine and sherbet (from Arabic); and coffee, yoghurt and kiosk (from Turkish); tomato, potato and tobacco (from Spanish).

Remember remember the 5th of November.

Remember, remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot I see no reason why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent To blow up the King and the Parliament Three score barrels of powder below Poor old England to overthrow By God's providence he was catched With a dark lantern and burning match Holloa boys, holloa boys God save the King! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! A penny loaf to feed ol' Pope A farthing cheese to choke him A pint of beer to rinse it down A faggot of sticks to burn him Burn him in a tub of tar Burn him like a blazing star Burn his body from his head Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead. Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!

This traditional rhyme, sung by children since the 17th century refers to the English equivalent to our 23-F.  Just like Lieutenant Colonel Tejero and his Guardias Civiles tried to blow up Spanish transition to democracy, Guy Fawkes was caught in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament with several dozen barrels of gunpowder on the 5th of November 1606.

This conspiracy, known as the Gunpowder Plot, was organized along with Robert Catesby two years before. The goal was simple, assassinating King James I along with most of the Protestant aristocracy who had driven Fawkes' Catholicism to be a persecuted religion.

A few days before the opening of parliament a letter warned one of the few Catholics in parliament not to attend. This alerted the rest of parliament members and the day before the opening, the Parliament was searched and under the parliament premises the final preparations for the plot were caught.

Guy then was arrested, tortured and forced to rebel some names of the conspirators, most of them dead and others who were persecuted by the government. That night entered into the history of England as a day to celebrate the night that the traitors were executed with the burning of "the guy", a recreation of  Guy Fawkes, in bonfires.

Now, if you check the links throughout the text you will find lots of activities, games, texts and exercises to improve your language skills and learn more about this English tradition.

The Oxford English Dictionary, the origin of which is not in the famous university, but the publisher, comes to occupy the place of the Academia in the field of English as there isn't an academy of the English language as such.
